As Ty Gibbs wins NASCAR Cup races, mom Heather tries to stay off the radio

Heather Gibbs wears two hats during NASCAR Cup Series races. 

The first is that of an executive as co-owner of Joe Gibbs Racing. The second is that of mom, as she's the mother of Cup Series driver Ty Gibbs, a two-time Cup Series winner this year who is second in the series standings while driving the No. 54 JGR Toyota. 

There was a time, however, when there wasn't as much harmony between the two on the racetrack. Heather recalls an ARCA race at Iowa — ironically, the track where Gibbs won the Cup race on Aug. 10 — in which she told her son to go low in turn 3. Doing so ended up being the losing move.

"Later, Ty was like, 'That's the wrong move! Why would you do that? Don't ever get on there again.'," Heather said Wednesday on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "I was like, 'OK, fine.' I wish I could be more laid back and enjoy it. I'm not. I probably have an unhealthy balance of being competitive."

Such a competitive spirit is understandable when you're the daughter-in-law of a three-time Super Bowl champion and legendary NASCAR team owner in Joe Gibbs. 

"I have four kids and I am competitive with their sports and what they do," Heather said. "I feel like four (Joe Gibbs Racing drivers), they're my own. I want them all to do well. I probably got a little bit of crazy in me, too."

Gibbs said she now stays mostly quiet on the radio. 

"I stay quiet," she said. "Even on the pit box when Ty's running, I probably hold my breath more than I should be breathing. I am not the yelling one, but I do think it in my head."
