Kevin Gausman struggles in second start with Cubs

Kevin Gausman's time with the Chicago Cubs has gotten off to a roller coaster start through two outings.

Gausman had an excellent debut with Chicago, allowing just two runs across seven strong innings against the Kansas City Royals.

His second start in a Cubs uniform came on Thursday against the Washington Nationals and it did not turn out anywhere near as good as his first one did.

Kevin Gausman doesn't make it through the fifth inning

Gausman retired the first 10 batters he faced on Thursday but then ran into trouble. He allowed eight of the final 12 batters he faced to reach base and was unable to make it through the fifth inning.

Overall, Gausman lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed six hits on seven runs, while walking one striking out seven batters. It was Gausman's shortest start since July 21 and tied for the most earned runs he's allowed in a start since June 25.

Kevin Gausman has been a mixed bag of results for the Cubs

Through two starts with the Cubs, Gausman has allowed eight earned runs across 12 2/3 innings, coming out to an ERA of 5.68. Thursday's start allowing six earned runs certainly wasn't great, but Gausman did fall victim to multiple soft hits on well executed pitches.

The results from Thursday's outing were much more in line with Gausman's performances throughout the entirety of the season.

A bounce-back performance in his next start will ease the minds of Cubs fans

Gausman's next start will likely come sometime in the Cubs three-game series next week against the Chicago White Sox.

A bounce-back performance in his next outing will be much needed for Gausman's confidence in his own ability to be a crucial piece of the staff headed into the postseason.
