How chat with Dak Prescott helped result in Von Miller joining Cowboys

Veteran pass-rusher Von Miller was born and raised in the Dallas suburb of DeSoto, Texas, so it's understandable that he was excited to complete a homecoming and officially sign with the Dallas Cowboys this week.

It turns out Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott may have had something to do with Miller's free-agency decision.

Von Miller to Dak Prescott: "It's about time"

As shared by Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys' website, Miller revealed on Tuesday that he bumped into Prescott in Las Vegas roughly one month ago.

"Hey man, it's about time, Dak," Miller told Prescott during that chat. "It's about time. You've got to break through with one of these teams. You've got to break through one of these years. I think this year you'll be able to do it. You've got everybody to do it."

Prescott and others within the Cowboys haven't hidden that they're embracing a Super Bowl-or-bust mentality after Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones made numerous moves during the offseason to bolster the team's defense. Thus far, postseason tournaments have not been kind to Prescott, as he has a career record of 2-5 as a playoff starter.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys have not played in an NFC Championship Game since they won the Super Bowl in January 1996. Despite that lack of success, Miller seems convinced that his interaction with Prescott was a message from above.

Von Miller: Interaction with Dak Prescott was "a sign"

"That just happened naturally," Miller added about running into Prescott. "Then the Cowboys reached out, and I was like, 'This is a sign, this is a sign for me.' We worked on it, talked to some other teams… just by being a Dallas Cowboy and wearing that star, it was beneficial to me and my family. That's what ultimately made the decision for me."

According to Patrik Walker of the Cowboys' website, Miller also said that it would "be a holiday in Dallas" if he were able to help the team win Super Bowl LXI in February 2027. Such comments could lead one to believe that Miller, Prescott and others associated with the Cowboys will deem the 2026 season to be a failure if they don't get their hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy this coming winter.
