The Green Bay Packers must protect Jordan Love. When he goes down, it's not a pretty sight. With that in mind, it makes sense that this franchise would pay a pretty penny to the players surrounding Love to protect him.
One of the most important positions on the field when it comes to protecting the quarterback is the interior offensive lineman. So, the Packers have invested in that position.
But they may have invested too much. One NFL analyst thinks Green Bay went over budget on a key player.
In a piece out on Wednesday, Garrett Podell of CBS Sports says that the Packers have the most overpaid interior offensive lineman in the entire league in Aaron Banks. His deal with Green Bay is four years, $77 million with $27 million fully guaranteed.
"Aaron Banks' sack rate wasn't terrible, just three allowed in 312 pass-blocking snaps, but he did surrender 23 quarterback pressures in 2025," Podell notes.
Banks also got a 56.5 offensive grade from Pro Football Focus, which came in at 55th out of the 79 qualified offensive guards they had in the tally.
Podell says "that's not quite the production you'd like to see out of the NFL's ninth-highest-paid guard in terms of average per year salary at $19.25 million."
Banks is also dealing with knee tendinitis, so he hasn't been able to participate in training camp.
"General manager Brian Gutekunst's recent, aggressive approach to free agency is a breath of fresh air for long-time Packers fans, but this deal may have been a whiff," Podell adds.
Hopefully Banks gets healthy again and can deliver what this contract intended for him to do. Until then, we wait.
