The striking divide in White Sox record when starting pitchers go deep in games

Talk about a big difference.

The Chicago White Sox have won 45 games and lost 18 in 2026 when their starting pitchers lasted at least five innings, through Wednesday. When the White Sox starting pitchers do not last past five innings in 2026, they have won 20 games and lost 42.

The X account Jay Cuda posted the statistic about the White Sox starting pitchers before they defeated the Cubs 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon. It did not mention whether the stat includes openers. An opener is a modern Major League Baseball phenomenon in which a "starting" pitcher pitches a few innings.

White Sox starters have 32 wins and 31 losses in games in which they earned a decision, with a 4.41 earned run average. The White Sox are 27th out of 30 teams in Major League Baseball in starter ERA. The White Sox are sixth in MLB with a 2.18 ERA as a pitching staff in wins.

In losses, the White Sox are 25th with a 6.29 ERA. Boston leads MLB with a 4.71 ERA in wins. The White Sox are last in MLB with 541.1 innings pitched by their starters through games played on Wednesday. Seattle leads MLB with 726.1 innings by its starters.

Stress on the White Sox bullpen

The lack of innings has put a lot of pressure on the White Sox bullpen. White Sox relief pitchers lead MLB with 583.2 innings. All-Star Davis Martin and Anthony Kay share the White Sox lead with nine wins. Martin leads the White Sox with 24 starts and Sean Burke paces the Pale Hose with 140.0 innings pitched.

The White Sox have had 16 different pitchers start games during the 2026 season. Amazingly, the White Sox have won 12 games and lost nine when manager Will Venable uses an opener in 2026.

The White Sox have used 33 different pitchers overall in 2026. There are currently 13 pitchers on the White Sox roster. MLB teams must add one pitcher and one position player to their rosters on Sept. 1. The extra pitcher should help the White Sox bullpen.
