Cowboys urged to cut ties with once-promising edge-rusher Sam Williams

The Dallas Cowboys have made quite a few changes to their roster going into the new season. Something got into Jerry Jones, and he just got very active during the offseason.

They tried to get Maxx Crosby. They didn't, but they sure beefed up their edge-rusher position. The team added a good dollop of edge-rusher depth during the offseason by trading for Packers player Rashan Gary, signing veteran Von Miller and snagging defensive ends in the NFL Draft, including Malachi Lawrence.

Now, they almost have a surplus of depth at edge-rusher. Almost. Because you can never have too many defensive ends. But, they could trade one away and not really feel it.

Could the Cowboys trade Sam Williams?

Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report has released a new list naming players that he thinks could get traded this year. "As many as 1,184 players will be released, return their playbooks and attempt to secure practice-squad spots," he states here, because of the roster deadline on Sunday.

He sees the Cowboys having the chance to trade edge rusher Sam Williams. He's earned around $7 million in the NFL so far, according to research from Spotrac.

"Sam Williams once appeared to be an ascending young edge-rusher for the Dallas Cowboys," he wrote. "A second-round pick in 2022, he amassed 8.5 sacks over the first two years of his career. But injury wiped out his 2024 season, and he had just one sack despite playing a career-high 474 snaps a year ago."

Right now, Williams doesn't seem like a lock for the 53-man roster at all. He could be on special teams, but why waste him there when Jones could trade him and get something in return? Many NFL teams are in need of more edge-rushers, and it's a valuable position, so don't be surprised if you see him in another team's jersey soon.
