Eagles' Jalen Hurts slammed with harsh reality ahead of season opener

Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts has always been a polarizing figure, dating back to his college days.

Not even winning a Super Bowl has been enough to change the narrative around him, and he's been on the wrong end of some pretty incendiary reports this offseason.

Hurts has also struggled in training camp, with even the Eagles' social media account sharing one of his interceptions. 

To add insult to injury, Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon dug deep into the numbers to highlight one of his least-disclosed issues: He's not great in the clutch.

“The three-time Pro Bowler has a 104.2 third-down passer rating in the second half of one-score games since 2023. And in the fourth quarter of one-score games during that span, he’s rushed for 34 first downs (ranking second among all NFL players). The problem? He has a league-high nine interceptions under those circumstances the last three years,” Gagnon wrote. 

A lot has been said of Hurts' flaws, and he's about to enter the final year with guaranteed money in his contract.

While that doesn't mean he won't be back with the team in 2027, this is definitely an important season for him.

Even without A.J. Brown, the Eagles should be a Super Bowl contender this season, and anything short of that will most likely fall on the quarterback.

The team doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry to offer him a contract extension, and with all the outside noise and criticism, both as a player and as a leader, Hurts is entering his most challenging campaign yet.

And even though there isn't a clear avenue to get better at the position if they move on from him, general manager Howie Roseman is a savvy negotiator who won't hesitate to go the extra mile to get a star to replace him if it comes down to it.
