UNC's Bill Belichick might officially be on the hot seat

Ten years ago, probably 90 percent of people would've agreed that Bill Belichick was the greatest head coach in football history.

Now, after watching how he's fared without Tom Brady and how ugly things got with the UNC Tar Heels, not everyone may feel that way.

Even if he is, the legendary head coach won't get the benefit of the doubt forever, especially after a bit of a shakeup in the program after such a disappointing and dysfunctional season.

Considering that, David Kenyon of Bleacher Report made a case for him being one of seven head coaches entering the season on the hot seat.

"Trotting out a lethargic offense in a 4-8 debut was a problem. North Carolina also enters 2026 amid off-field distractions and questions about the program's direction, including public attention surrounding Belichick's relationship with Jordon Hudson, Michael Lombardi's recent administrative leave and Steve Belichick's medical leave. Whether those factors affect the team on the field remains to be seen," Kenyon wrote.

Belichick reportedly got tired of waiting for another opportunity in the pros.

Taking a school known for its basketball program and turning it into "the 33rd NFL team," as Lombardi advertised it, would've cemented his status as the greatest of all time even further.

Instead, the team only made headlines for Lombardi, Belichick's girlfriend, and UNC's inability to play winning football. It's early, but it certainly isn't encouraging.

Ironically, chances are that Belichick would've already gotten another chance to coach in the pros, and it's hard to believe he would've produced these types of results, let alone amid all the off-field distractions.

He's proven people wrong before, and he certainly deserves his flowers, but this business only cares about what you can do now, not about what you did in the past.
