Three areas Tottenham need to improve before transfer window closes

Tottenham Hotspur have not gotten off to a good start in the 2026-27 Premier League season, losing their first two games by a margin of five goals and failing to score a single goal themselves.

Roberto De Zerbi has made a plethora of changes to the squad over the summer, but there are still areas that remain weak. Here are three positions that Tottenham must strengthen as the transfer window comes to a close. 

1. Striker

While Tottenham have brought in both Savio and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City to help their attack, the club is still lacking an out-and-out striker to solve their goalscoring woes. 

Dominic Solanke and Richarlison are both options at striker, but neither has cemented their place as a clear starter. Tottenham ran rampant in a 5-1 win against Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup, but the club has failed to make the same impression in the league. 

One of the big names linked to Tottenham has been Liverpool's Cody Gakpo, who could help the front line. Liverpool have not ruled out a move for Gakpo this summer, which could help Spurs make a late push to sign the Dutch international. 

Tottenham have also been linked with Igor Matanovic, who has also caught the eyes of several other Premier League clubs. Matanovic has proven he can score goals, with three goals already this season for Freiburg. 

2. Goalkeeper 

Tottenham seemed content with Antonin Kinsky as their goalkeeper, as the club loaned Guglielmo Vicario to Juventus earlier in the summer. Kinsky has let in five goals in the opening two games of the season, leaving room for concern as to whether he can remain the starting keeper this season. 

De Zerbi did bring in Martin Dubravka, who has plenty of experience between the sticks. After a disastrous two games to open the season, Dubravka might be a good choice going forward.

3. Right-back

In Tottenham's defeat to Newcastle, 20-year-old Archie Gray was the starting right-back, with World Cup winner Pedro Porro playing in a more advanced role on the right, although Porro is more of a right-back. 

Tottenham lost Djed Spence to Inter Milan earlier in the window, leaving room for a new right-back to come in. Earlier in the window, Tottenham seemed to be interested in Crystal Palace's Daniel Munoz, who now seems poised to join Nottingham Forest. 

Tottenham's defense continues to look weak, despite several defensive arrivals over the summer. Jan Paul van Hecke has shown promising signs as the new center-back paired with Micky van de Ven, but there is clearly room for improvement after the two opening multi-goal losses.
