Shane van Gisbergen denied Chase berth after Ryan Preece's Daytona win

Shane van Gisbergen was stuck between a rock and a hard place in the closing laps of Saturday's Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona.

As most of the field raced towards the checkered flag, they were very close on getting to the end of the race on fuel. When the caution came out on Lap 156, an opportunity was presented for drivers to come down pit road and top off.

Crew chief Stephen Doran called van Gisbergen to the pits, which ensured he'd have enough fuel but cost him valuable spots on the racetrack and plenty of points.

Racing for the final spot in the Chase with RFK Racing's Ryan Preece, van Gisbergen, who won Stage 1 of Saturday's race, could only watch as the pack crashed in front of him on the final lap and Preece won the race, stealing the 16th and final Chase bid to knock van Gisbergen and the No. 97 Trackhouse Racing team out.

One lap determined Shane van Gisbergen's 2026 season

"Congrats to the 60," van Gisbergen told NBC. "One night doesn't sum up our year. I guess we haven't been good enough. It's been fun to be close. Obviously, you want to be in the Chase. Didn't make it."

Van Gisbergen finished the race in 27th and missed the Chase by only 16 points. He won twice in the regular season at Watkins Glen and Sonoma and entered the night 31 points up on Preece for the final spot.

The Auckland, New Zealand, native will have to wait at least another year for another shot at a Cup Series title.
