What the win over TCU really means for North Carolina

In 2025, North Carolina kicked off its season with a 48-14 loss to TCU that set the path for how the rest of their 4-8 season would go. 

To kick off the start of the 2026 college football season, the Tar Heels beat TCU, 15-10. That swing between the two scores is huge, but the more important story is how UNC pulled this win off.

How North Carolina notched season-opening win over TCU

It wasn't exactly the prettiest or most explosive performance that won them this game. TCU got two 40-yard plays in the first quarter and was averaging 6.5 yards per carry heading into halftime. But the Tar Heels defense clamped down after coming back from the break, allowing just 121 yards in the second half, paired with three sacks. TCU finished with only 281 total yards and its lowest-scoring game since a 41-3 loss to Kansas State back in 2023. 

The situational execution from head coach Bill Belichick is what stands out the most. With North Carolina protecting a five-point lead, defensive tackle Markis Deal caused an offsides penalty for TCU on 4th-and-1 with 31 seconds left, letting UNC close the game in victory formation. That kind of detail-oriented football is the identity Belichick has talked about building since he was hired. 

Ohio State transfer tight end Jelani Thurman caught four passes for 94 yards in his debut, giving offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino a matchup problem for TCU's secondary. Quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. called the win a good feeling while still noting that he didn't play his best.

None of this erases the questions that piled up around the program during the offseason, and though the win gives a positive outlook, it's worth remembering this TCU team was playing its first game with a new quarterback and offensive coordinator. Belichick himself called the defensive plays directly for the first time since his NFL days, an adjustment worth watching as North Carolina moves into playing the rest of its opponents. 

Nevertheless, the shift from a 34-point loss to a five-point win over the same team while relying more on situational discipline than an explosive offense is the kind of foundation the Tar Heels didn't have at any point last season. 

UNC now has a bye week before hosting East Tennessee State, and how much Saturday's win actually means will be determined on how much that discipline stands up against tougher competition.
