Kaleb Johnson trade becomes more significant for Packers after Josh Jacobs placed on commissioner's exempt list

What else do Packers fans need to know about Kaleb Johnson? 

The Packers already have potential replacements for three-time Pro Bowler Jacobs in MarShawn Lloyd and Chris Brooks. The backs, however, have a combined 410 career rushing yards, so it's wise for Green Bay to add another.

Johnson, pick No. 83 of the 2025 NFL Draft, struggled during his rookie season in Pittsburgh. He failed to make the most of limited opportunities, rushing for 69 yards on 28 carries (2.5 yards per carry, well below league average). He also didn't seem to understand the kickoff rules when he let one slip through his fingers and let the Seattle Seahawks recover it for a touchdown in a 31-17 Week 2 home loss.

Johnson could benefit from a change of scenery. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is an offensive wizard who may help the RB realize the promise he showed during his college career with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

In 2024, Johnson ranked seventh in the nation in rushing yards (1,537 on 240 carries) and tied for sixth in rushing touchdowns (21), earning a second-team All-American nod. Former Pro Football Focus analyst Trevor Sikkema tabbed him as his RB5 heading into the 2025 draft. 

"Johnson is a physically gifted running back who excels with the ball in his hands," wrote Sikkema. "As an early-down player, he can be successful behind any blocking scheme with good vision, light footwork, impressive burst and power."

The Packers hope Johnson showcases those skills in Green Bay. They need him to, especially if Jacobs misses multiple games, and there's a chance he will.
