Warriors' interest in Devin Booker shows team's embarrassing trend

There have been some whispers recently about the Golden State Warriors being interested in landing All-Star guard Devin Booker; that is the belief of longtime insider Tim Kawakami, at the very least. 

While this front is more contrived than real, it actually falls squarely into the way the franchise has operated in recent years.

Warriors may continue embarrassing trend

If this belief does end up holding water, it will likely only repeat an embarrassing trend of pipe dreams for the Warriors brain trust. It is no secret that Golden State has been so desperate in finding a new superstar to pair with Stephen Curry, but to no avail. That will be the probable outcome if they likewise mount a real chase for Booker.

The rationale behind this rather firm prediction is simple. At this moment, there is really no rhyme or reason for the Suns to even consider parting with their franchise player. While they are not championship contenders as currently constructed, they are still pretty much in the thick of the playoff race out West.

In addition, it is not like the Warriors have some compelling pieces that would make Phoenix amenable to shipping away their superstar. Golden State does not even have a core piece for their future, which is basically what is required just to have a shot at someone like Booker.

Just this offseason, the Warriors missed out on both Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James. Both of those players are even more high-profile commodities than Devin Booker, but given their lack of attractive assets aside from draft picks, the Suns superstar will also be out of their reach.

Golden State is slowly fading away from relevance, and that is perfectly okay. However, their front office is still clinging to that small glimmer of hope to return to contention with Curry still playing like an All-NBA player, but their attempts at landing another superstar are simply close to hopeless at this point. Booker will only be another entry on that growing list if they indeed go after him.
