Dan Orlovsky says the quiet part out loud about Bears QB Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears were one of the most entertaining teams in the entire NFL one year ago in Ben Johnson's first season as head coach.

While they set the record for the most wins (seven) after trailing in the final two minutes of a game since the 1970 NFL/AFL merger, they had the league's ninth-best scoring offense and a quarterback in Caleb Williams who showcased his ability to step up in clutch late-game situations.

Following the progression the Bears showed in Johnson's first season by making the playoffs, they followed up his preseason proclamation of setting scoring records by laying a 59-37 beating on the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

After scoring the second-most points in franchise history in a regular-season game and the second-most by any team in its season opener, this Bears offense looked scary. Even ESPN's Dan Orlovsky, who has been critical of Williams at times, could not hide how impressed he was by Sunday's performance.

Caleb Williams, Bears make a statement to begin season

"What they are doing, or at least what they did, is historical in many ways," Orlovsky said during an appearance on Monday's edition of "First Take." "To score 60 in an NFL game against a good defense in their building is incredibly difficult to do." They had three rushing touchdowns that went over 25 yards. No one's done that since that Eagles team that went to the Super Bowl. Think of the Rams snow game, that happened in that game. And Caleb Williams, man, everyone knows I was team Jayden Daniels. What Caleb Williams is doing right now is very, very impressive and this offense is going to push 35 points a game."

Although Williams took a step back with his completion percentage last season (58.1%), he set career highs in passing yards (3,942) and passing TDs (27). He also accounted for seven interceptions and seven fumbles, but the late-game performances and heroic plays set the bar high going into Year 3 in the league.

He wasted no time getting started on Sunday by going 21-of-29 for 269 yards with two TDs and zero interceptions, along with 10 carries for 65 yards and two scores on the ground.

As impressive as Williams was, though, it was a balanced attack all around, as running backs D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai combined for 224 yards and four TDs. It was all part of a collective 291-yard rushing attack, which is why that specific unit was one of the biggest winners of Week 1.

The Bears had 552 yards of total offense, good for the fourth-most in franchise history. Whether they continue to play at this level and get anywhere near the Denver Broncos' record of 606 points set back in 2013 remains to be seen, but if they continue to convert on third down and cut back on their penalties from Sunday's game, it may not be out of reach.

One area that Williams struggled in last season was his 58.1 completion percentage, which ranked 32nd out of 33 eligible QBs. He did not have that issue against the Panthers and appeared to take some pregame advice from Hall of Famer and NFL on Fox analyst Drew Brees to heart with his 22-yard TD pass to tight end Cole Kmet.

The defense is still a huge concern after giving up 37 points and 478 yards on their end, but it is hard to ignore what Williams and this Bears offense are capable of.
