There's certainly a realistic scenario where Arkansas Razorbacks starting quarterback KJ Jackson loses his gig.
Is this the best week to make a change at quarterback, though? Clearly, first-year head coach Ryan Silverfield doesn't think it's appropriate.
The Razorbacks are 1-1 after losing to No. 20 Utah in Week 2, 43-10, and Jackson hasn't looked great.
Against Utah, the junior from Montgomery, Alabama, completed just 14-of-34 passes for 139 yards with an interception. He was pulled in favor of backup AJ Hill with Arkansas trailing 43-3.
Could the Razorbacks roll with Hill against the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs in Week 3?
Silverfield certainly wasn't happy with what he saw against Utah.
“I thought the quarterback play was not to the standard that we expect and not to the standard to win football games,” Silverfield said, per Steve Samra of On3. “KJ knows good and well that he did some things that can’t happen.”
With that said, he did confirm that Jackson will start on Saturday when the Razorbacks welcome the 2-0 Bulldogs to town. He gave the quarterback his starting endorsement, but it wasn't a strong one.
“We plan on having KJ as our starting quarterback, but I’ve got great faith in everybody in that quarterback room,” Silverfield said.
Notably, Hill led Arkansas to its only touchdown against Utah, and he went 8-of-14 for 105 yards and a touchdown.
There's reason to believe that Hill, a sophomore who followed Silverfield from Memphis, could give the Razorbacks a boost, but it doesn't make a ton of sense to throw him to the wolves (or the Bulldogs) in a game in which Arkansas will certainly be behind the eight ball.
If things go poorly again, and they're likely to go poorly, Hill will almost certainly play against Georgia, but at this point, Arkansas may be smart to just roll with Jackson as the starter and let him either swim or sink with the ship.
