The quick fix Dan Lanning, Oregon can make has nothing to do with X's and O's

Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks have to regroup.

This is a program that had national championship expectations heading into the 2026 season, but two weeks in, things are already starting to look a bit shaky.

After a roaring Week 1 win over the Boise State Broncos, the Ducks shockingly lost to the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Week 2.

It was a 39-31 loss to a Cowboys team that went 1-11 last season and is still breaking in new head coach Eric Morris and new quarterback Drew Mestemaker.

After losing to Tulsa to start the season, 24-10, the Cowboys hosted the Ducks and shocked the college football world.

Now, Oregon has to quickly bounce back and prove that it can still be a College Football Playoff team, but according to Lanning, this has nothing to do with pure X's and O's.

He's making it seem as if his locker room perhaps got a bit caught up in the hype of the 2026 season. He's tired of expectations and just wants to focus on the here and now.

“Stop looking into the future. Everybody wants to make a prediction before the season starts. You know, it doesn’t matter until you play the games,” Lanning said earlier this week (h/t On3). "We’ve seen every year with teams that are supposed to be good that aren’t good. We have the capability to be good. We have good enough players; we have good enough coaches. I haven’t coached them well enough. I haven’t done a good enough job, so I know I can do better."
