South Carolina’s SEC opener is huge for Shane Beamer

When looking at the college football slate in Week 3, it is clear that the biggest SEC game is a top 10 showdown between the LSU Tigers and Ole Miss Rebels.

Move east of Louisiana and you'll land in Columbia, South Carolina, home of the South Carolina Gamecocks. South Carolina will play host to the Mississippi State Bulldogs in each team's SEC opener and arguably the second biggest SEC contest of the weekend.

It is a huge game for both sides, and the Gamecocks have a massive hurdle to clear in Year 6 for head coach Shane Beamer.

South Carolina has never started 3-0 under Shane Beamer

That's right, in the five Week 3 games since Beamer arrived in 2021, the Gamecocks are 0-5. All five of those Week 3 losses are to SEC opponents.

South Carolina is just 1-4 in its SEC openers under Beamer, with the lone win coming over the Kentucky Wildcats in Week 2 of the 2024 season. The average margin of defeat in the losses is 18.7 points.

South Carolina has a tall task ahead on Saturday

Before the season began, many South Carolina fans pointed to Week 4 against Alabama as the game that could possibly shift the season. Not much thought was put into the Week 3 game against Mississippi State.

Those thoughts have quickly changed with the offensive firepower the Bulldogs have shown through two weeks. Mississippi State is averaging 620.5 yards per game and its quarterback, Kamario Taylor has thrown for 580 yards with seven touchdown and no interceptions.

South Carolina's season hangs in the balance on Saturday

South Carolina's schedule is very manageable from Weeks 4-6, making Saturday's game so important for both the short and long-term success of the program.

A win for the Gamecocks means that Beamer clears his Week 3 and SEC opener hurdles and South Carolina would have a ton of momentum headed into Week 4 against Alabama.

A loss, though, puts the Gamecocks behind the eight ball in SEC play and makes Week 4 against the Crimson Tide a must-win game to save the season.
