Mets share update on Jared Young injury after scary moment in loss to Phillies

New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was stretchered off the field in the top of the sixth inning of Thursday's home game against the Philadelphia Phillies after he was accidentally kneed in the head by Mets starting pitcher Nolan McLean. 

Young gave fans a thumbs-up before he exited the field of play, and Mets interim manager Andy Green shared an update on the 31-year-old's status following New York's 3-0 loss.

“It was really scary," Green said about the incident, per Danny Abriano of SNY. "Since he’s got to the hospital, he’s had a CT scan, and the results have come back negative. Still experiencing real concussion symptoms right now. Likely avoided the scariest outcome. It was a terrifying moment on the baseball field."

In the sixth inning, Young lunged to his right to field a ground ball as McLean made his way toward first base. An apparent misunderstanding resulted in McLean running into Young, and Young then appeared to be knocked out for several minutes while he was attended to by medical staffers. 

"It’s scary to see one of our brothers, one of the most respected and loved teammates we have here, like that," Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor said after the loss, per Dan Martin of the New York Post.

Somewhat surprisingly, Green left McLean in the game following the Young incident. McLean then responded by ending the frame with a strikeout. 

"Seeing another great teammate [McLean] saying, 'This is not good. I hit him with my knee,' somebody that played football, that knows hits," Lindor said about McLean’s reaction to the incident. "Life is bigger than this game, for sure, and seeing [Young] not reacting [and] then seeing the trainer holding his neck, it was a scary moment. You can only think about how quick life can get out of your hands and think about his family. It was a tough moment. Respect for Nolan to gather himself and finish the inning." 

What was already an emotional week for a Mets team that is eliminated from playoff contention became even more difficult on Thursday night. Lindor and Co. will attempt to pick themselves up and give home fans something to cheer about when the 69-84 Mets host the 85-68 Phillies again on Friday night.
