LaNorris Sellers has been failed by South Carolina, per analyst

The South Carolina Gamecocks are 2-1 after an unconscionable home loss to the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Week 3.

This was a Mississippi State program that went 7-18 over the past two seasons under head coach Jeff Lebby. Those Bulldogs rolled into Williams-Brice Stadium and beat the Gamecocks, 41-34.

The Gamecocks have now lost nine of their last 13 games under head coach Shane Beamer. After looking like an ascending program in quarterback LaNorris Sellers' redshirt freshman season, they've since slid down the ranks in the SEC and certainly nationally.

It's truly a headscratcher, because Sellers has the physical talent to be one of the top quarterbacks in the country. Things are changing in the sport, of course, but shouldn't South Carolina be a contender simply because of the fact? 

Much like in the NFL, if you've got a quarterback, you've got a chance.

According to CBS Sports analyst Cooper Petagna, South Carolina's problems aren't on Sellers. In fact, he believes the Gamecocks have failed the quarterback.

“Well, just to be succinct with this, I think South Carolina’s failed him,” Petagna recently said (h/t On3). 

In that breakout 2024 season, Sellers had players like running back Raheim Sanders and tight end Joshua Simon, who really helped him spread his wings.

Sanders rushed for 881 yards and 11 touchdowns that season while Simon caught seven touchdowns at tight end.

Sellers hasn't had that kind of help over the last two seasons, and to make matters worse, he's on his third offensive coordinator. From Dowell Loggains to Mike Shula to Kendal Briles.

The organizational consistency has not been there, and that's hurt Sellers, per Petagna.
