Brewers name Christian Yelich first captain in franchise history

For the first time in the 57-year history of the franchise, the Milwaukee Brewers have named their first captain.

While there have been some players in previous seasons who embodied everything it meant to represent Milwaukee, the man chosen on Saturday may have done it better than anyone else ever has.

Christian Yelich has been named the Brewers captain

According to a post shared from Milwaukee's official X account on Saturday, outfielder Christian Yelich was named as the first captain in franchise history.

Beginning on Saturday, Yelich will have the patented "C" patch on his jersey, signifying his status as captain.

Christian Yelich asked Robin Yount for permission to be named captain

According to Brewers reporter Hunter Baumgardt, there was one request that Yelich made to Brewers manager Pat Murphy before officially being named captain.

Yelich wanted to speak to franchise legend Robin Yount and ask his permission before the announcement was official.

"He had one request that we ask Robin Yount before we do such a thing. Robin agreed wholeheartedly. Because in Yeli's mind, Robin was the first captain."

Christian Yelich is among the greatest players in franchise history

Yelich landed in Milwaukee in 2018 after being traded from the Miami Marlins. Since then, Yelich has been an outstanding player for the Brewers and is cementing himself as one of the top players in franchise history.

He's in the top 10 in nearly every offensive category, and he'll only continue to climb those lists as time goes on.

If it wasn't already known by most. Yelich's designation as the first captain in franchise history shows just how important he has been and will continue to be for Milwaukee.
