Kyle Whittingham fuming after Michigan's last-second loss to Iowa

It wasn't a happy crowd on Saturday in Ann Arbor after the Michigan Wolverines dropped their game against the Iowa Hawkeyes with a last-second touchdown, 20-19. But all head coach Kyle Whittingham can do is look forward and try to fix what's wrong with the situation.

On Saturday following the game, Whittingham spoke about the biggest problem that the team has been showing this season.

"I think before today we were somewhere in the middle of the country and penalties, 50th or 60th, something like that," Whittingham told reporters, according to video released from the university. "Now we're probably back in the top 30 or 20. So it's excessive, and we've got to do something about it. It was a couple of really costly ones. Particularly on that last drive."

Michigan's penalty problem is becoming costly

Whittingham added, "We've just got to keep coaching it and keep pressing on our players' minds that penalties have consequences in games. I mean, they extend drives, they bog drives down. It's got to continue to be a point of emphasis and continue to clean it up."

Michigan had eight penalties in the Saturday showdown, resulting in a loss of 75 yards. They've had 32 penalties now for the full season.

But he's not going to dwell on it. Whittingham told reporters that he told his team they have to move forward.

"It was a tough locker room, but I told them: 'Hey, first of all, it's a shame that we let that one get away from us because we had it.' I told them, sometimes in life you get knocked down, and things seem tough. How are you going to overcome that?" Whittingham said.

He added that "That's life," and they've "got to go right back to work on the next opponent."

That opponent is the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday on the road.
