Chargers rookie safety Genesis Smith makes potential interception of year vs. Bills

Los Angeles Chargers rookie safety Genesis Smith grabbed the first two interceptions of his NFL career in a Sunday road game against the Buffalo Bills. His second will be the more memorable one.

On a 2nd-and-6 at Buffalo's 35-yard line, quarterback Josh Allen stepped up in the pocket and hurled a deep ball intended for wide receiver DJ Moore. He and Smith then tussled for the ball before the safety secured possession on the Chargers' 10-yard line.

For those who are wondering how Smith caught the pass, take a close look at the instant replay from the Fox broadcast. The safety tipped the ball while covering Moore downfield. As they fell, the ball landed on his chest, and he realized he would intercept it. Heads-up play from the rookie.

Smith's coverage instincts are one reason the Chargers took the former Arizona Wildcats star with pick No. 131 in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Smith's tackling appears to be improving under head coach Jim Harbaugh. Pro Football Focus credited him with zero tackles missed in his first two games in 2026. He must keep progressing as a tackler to earn more playing time.

If he does, Smith could become a key member of L.A.'s defense. Ball-hawking safeties are some of the most valuable players in the league, and the rookie could clearly become one.
