Jerry Jones gives update on possible trade, addresses Cowboys' loss to Ravens

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones teased on multiple occasions earlier in September that he could pull the trigger on a massive roster move and then sign an acquired player to a big-money contract extension before the NFL trade deadline arrives on Nov. 10. 

During a Tuesday morning appearance on Dallas sports radio station 105.3 The Fan, Jones shared an update regarding a potential trade. 

Cowboys having "conversations" about a blockbuster trade? 

According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, Jones said there are "conversations going on" right now about the Cowboys possibly upgrading their roster. Jones could not comment on specific players attached to other teams for reasons related to tampering. 

"I'd just say we're right on top of it," Jones added, per Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys' website. "We're very aware of the moving parts out here. We should be. And communication is a big part of that. It's a big part of that. ...We all have contacts, and this is a time when you really can have discussions that could be productive." 

The Cowboys are among the handful of teams that have been linked with Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. throughout September. Porter hasn't played this season amid his desire for a contract extension, and the Steelers seemingly are sticking to their policy of not negotiating with any player during a campaign. That said, Porter may play at least some snaps for Pittsburgh against the rival Cleveland Browns on Thursday night. 

Jerry Jones reacts to criticisms of Brian Schottenheimer

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has received criticism for his clock management during this past Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Specifically, Dallas settled for a field goal after the club had a first-and-goal situation from the two-yard line with less than 30 seconds remaining. 

Per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Jerry Jones didn't dance around his feelings while speaking about the Cowboys' final offensive drive of what became a 34-31 loss to the Ravens.

"There’s no explanation that you’re satisfied with," Jerry Jones said. "None. Let’s be sure that we all understand that. They don’t have one that they’re satisfied with. We made mistakes during that time, there’s no question about it. There’s no explanation. There’s an evaluation of how to not make the same mistakes again, which is what you should be doing. We can’t get that back. No way to get it back. What you can do is use it — if there’s any aspect of it that you want to just not even think happened. Any aspect of it, use it to get better."

Schottenheimer and Co. will try to be better when the 1-2 Cowboys play at the 0-3 Houston Texans on Oct. 4. As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had Dallas as a 2.5-point road underdog against Houston.
