Kirill Marchenko to make his Maple Leafs debut vs. Canadiens

Kirill Marchenko will make his Toronto Maple Leafs debut on Tuesday night against the Montreal Canadiens in the season opener in Toronto. In his career against the Canadiens, Marchenko has three goals, five assists and eight points across nine regular-season games.

The Maple Leafs traded forwards Matthew Knies and Steven Lorentz on Monday and acquired Marchenko and Miles Wood from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Entering his fifth season in the NHL, Marchenko is a 26-year-old right winger whose elite scoring punch had him record 27 goals, 40 assists and 67 points across 76 games last season with the Blue Jackets.

He is expected to be an excellent fit for the Maple Leafs this season, following four consecutive 20-goal seasons, with a career high of 31 goals and 74 points in the 2024-25 season.

What Kirill Marchenko offers the Maple Leafs

Marchenko is established for his ability to cover the ice well as a top-line forward. But beyond his offense, he's shown shot-blocking consistency, blocking 38 to 40 shots in each of his four NHL seasons.

All things considered, his defense is an underrated aspect of his game, since his elite offensive profile overshadows it. However, it adds a reliable two-way component to his game, making him a compelling addition to the Maple Leafs.

In addition, he uses his 6-foot-3 frame to win battles along the boards. He also has an effective wrist shot and is expected to be an elite linemate alongside Auston Matthews.

As a top-line winger, his presence will provide Toronto with a boost and weapon on the power play with his fast-paced skating speed. Locked into a six-year, $75 million contract extension during his prime years, the blockbuster trade also provides the Maple Leafs with long-term scoring depth.
