Devils' Jack Hughes confused by awkward joke about extensive injury history

New Jersey Devils forward Jack Hughes is a bonafide superstar and one of the best players in the NHL when he is healthy.

The key words: when healthy.

The one big drawback with Hughes' game is that he has missed extensive time in most of his NHL seasons to this point, including a bizarre injury last year that happened during a team dinner.

That history was brought up during a between periods interview with ESPN's A.J. Mleczko during Thursday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

At the conclusion of the interview, Mleczko told Hughes that it was good to see him healthy this season, and then made a comment about wrapping himself in bubble wrap this season and using plastic cutlery.

Hughes initially sat in silence for a few moments before angrily skating away and making a comment about a weird joke that was.

In fairness, that was awkward, and is probably the type of thing he expects to hear from trash talking fans or social media trolls than during an interview in the middle of the game.

It is understandable that it did not land with him.

Then again, maybe Mleczko was just getting some payback for the American women's team (which Mleczko won a gold medal with in 1998) after Hughes laughed at a joke about them being invited to the White House following their gold medals at the 2026 games in January, and then defending it.

Maybe everybody can call it even. Awkwardness all around.
