After making changes to its superspeedway package in an effort to improve the racing at Daytona in August, NASCAR will make further changes ahead of the Oct. 25 race at Talladega Superspeedway, the final drafting race of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season.
The spoiler on each car will be shortened to 3.5 inches from 4.0 at Daytona. Combined with the reduced horsepower NASCAR introduced to the package, drivers should, in theory, have more agency to make moves and drive their way through the pack.
The change comes after NASCAR's racing product on superspeedways in the Next-Gen era was widely criticized by fans for a lack of passing, which, in turn, turned races at Daytona and Talladega into races contingent on how much fuel drivers could save.
NASCAR altered the stage lengths at Talladega in April in an effort to reduce the amount of fuel mileage racing, though it was still prevalent. NASCAR will use the same stage lengths at Talladega later in October that it used in April, with Stage 1 making up over half of the race at 98 laps. Stages 2 and 3 will be 45 laps each, respectively, to complete the 188-lap, 500-mile race at the 2.66-mile Alabama superspeedway. The YellaWood 500 at Talladega is the 34th race of the 2026 Cup Series season and the eighth of 10 in the Chase.
