Nick Saban ended his career with Alabama, leading the Crimson Tide to more than 200 wins over 17 seasons with the football program. But at least one point in his career, the NFL came calling.
With college football in full swing, Saban is out in the press again, analyzing games and talking about the current state of college football. He's also talking about his storied career.
While he was promoting ESPN's upcoming six-part "Saban" docuseries, Saban appeared on SiriusXM and talked about the time he met with the New York Giants and general manager George Young when he was back in East Lansing, Michigan, coaching for the Michigan State Spartans. They were interested in him being their head coach.
"I guess I can reveal this now. In some of these cases, it's very difficult in college (when) you have an opportunity to go to the NFL," Saban told Chris "Mad Dog" Russo on Thursday, "(because) you're still coaching, you're still recruiting (and) if you stay in college you don't want to upset your coaches and recruiting, all that. So, you don't want to say that I'm going to go interview for the Giants job."
He added, "So, George and I worked out a deal. He said, 'Where do you think we can meet and nobody would know it?' And I said, 'The least obvious place you'd ever think - just come to my house in East Lansing, and nobody would ever know.' That's what he did."
Saban also said he was offered the job but didn't take it.
