"Breakdown" may be too strong a word to use to describe the University of Michigan's football season so far, but it also may be appropriate for a program used to always being on top. It was a rude awakening to see the Wolverines fall to the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday in a game that was supposed to be a fairly confident win for Michigan.
But there are no easy wins in college football, and Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham is learning that. After the game, the head coach didn't hold back and was brutally honest about what he and this team have to do moving forward.
According to Isaiah Hole of USA Today's Wolverines Wire, "Saturday's 20-14 loss to Minnesota had the worst offensive output since Michigan's loss to Ohio State last season, when the Wolverines mustered only 163 yards."
After the game, Whittingham said that the team is going to use its bye week to "figure out our problems, because we've got enough problems to occupy our time, I can tell you that."
"We'll look at everything," Whittingham said, according to USA Today. "I don't want to sit here and make a decision without watching this tape, but we've had some good individual performances so far this year, and stretches, and certain games."
He added, "Positive, the defense has played well the entire season. There's been a lot of good things going on in the defense, but it gets to the point where they just can't hold up anymore, and unfortunately that reached that point in the second half today."
The coach also focused on how the team is turning the ball over "far too often" and how the "run game has been spotty, awful today." In general, Whittingham's words were fairly irate, which is understandable after losing a game that analysts thought would be a clear win for the Wolverines.
