Latest Colorado loss was complete mess for Deion Sanders

Every button that head coach Deion Sanders tries to push for the Colorado Buffaloes seems to be the wrong button. That was very evident on Saturday in a 29-7 loss to No. 12 Texas Tech.

Special teams blunders and bad quarterback play defined the loss that dropped Colorado to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in Big 12 play, and it is starting to leave more questions than answers in year four of the Sanders era.

Colorado has major issues at quarterback and on special teams

When it comes to the special teams issues, there were several.

  • They had to burn multiple timeouts because they did not have enough players on the field for field goal blocks on two separate occasions. They were not one player short, either. On the first attempt, it was only seven players on the field. On the second, it was only nine players.
  • His kicker missed two field goals, including a 29-yard attempt.
  • There was a botched fake punt that went horribly.

Sanders has to own all of that. Every single bit of it.

He made the decision to go into the season without a designated special teams coach, and instead turned the role over to a shared responsibility among the coaches on the staff.

While it is an aspect of the game that often times gets overlooked, it is still one of the three phases of the game, and one that can dramatically impact the outcome of a game. Asking coaches who already have a full plate trying to handle other duties on game day, and in preparation leading up to game day, is a tall order. It is also an unnecessary order.

The special teams issues were an embarrassment and played a massive role in swinging the game.

Then there was the quarterback situation, and even though Sanders wouldn't specifically say it, he did not leave much doubt as to what it was — the quarterback play.

Colorado made a quarterback change coming into this week, replacing starter Julian Lewis with Isaac Wilson. While Wilson did lead a touchdown drive early in the game, he threw three interceptions (while Colorado threw four as a team), including a baffling pick-six in his own end zone.

What makes the change so bizarre is that following Saturday's game, Sanders said that he would love for Lewis to come forward and explain what happened, and that he didn't actually bench him.

The whole thing is a giant mess, and seems to be getting worse.

Colorado is now 18-24 during Sanders' tenure, and outside of one strong year with Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter, the Buffaloes have been most uncompetitive during Sanders' tenure.
