Bengals reveal Ja'Marr Chase's status after WR suffers injury vs. Jaguars

Cincinnati Bengals fans who expected wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase to dominate the Jacksonville Jaguars in Sunday's home game were left wanting after he suffered an early second-quarter injury.

Jaguars cornerback Jarrian Jones grabbed Chase's facemask and slammed him to the turf after the wideout gained four yards on a 2nd-and-21 from Jacksonville's 33-yard line. The DB was flagged for a 15-yard penalty.

After Chase got back on his feet, he walked to the locker room with a trainer and was evaluated for a concussion. At halftime, the Bengals announced the WR suffered one and would miss the rest of the game. He finished with three receptions for 27 yards.

What's next for Ja'Marr Chase?

Now that Chase has been diagnosed with a concussion, the WR must clear concussion protocol to play in a Week 5 road game against the Miami Dolphins (Fox, 1 p.m. ET). Players in concussion protocol must check five boxes, which include getting a clean bill of health from an independent neurologist.

Recovery times from a concussion vary. It can take a few days or a few weeks.

The Bengals hope Chase recovers quickly from his concussion. Entering Sunday, the WR was tied for 10th in the NFL in receptions (18) and for fourth in touchdown catches (three). He made a potential catch of the year in a 20-6 Week 2 road win over the Houston Texans, snatching a 32-yard TD pass from quarterback Joe Burrow.

Chase's excellent hands are one reason he has become Burrow's top target since the 2021 first-round pick arrived in Cincinnati. From 2021-25, he ranked second in the NFL in receiving yards (6,837 on 520 receptions) and touchdown catches (54).

The Bengals have one of the league's deeper WR rooms. WR2 Tee Higgins — who ranked 10th in the league in receiving yards (244) entering Sunday — is also a star. This Cincinnati offense, however, needs a healthy Chase to operate at maximum capacity.
