QB carousel will doom Deion Sanders, Colorado Buffaloes

The Colorado Buffaloes are 2-3 and 0-2 against Big 12 competition after five weeks of action.

They're riding a three-game losing skid, and they've not yet appeared to have reached the bottom.

The reason being? The Buffs are undisciplined, and they appear to be void of leadership. They're the most penalized team in the Big 12. They're also offensively inept. After scoring an early touchdown against Texas Tech in Week 5, their next 12 drives featured two missed field goals, four interceptions, a botched fake punt, three punts, and two turnovers on downs.

Colorado lost, 29-7.

"We've been horrible," head coach Deion Sanders said after the game, per ESPN. "Don't sugarcoat it. We've been horrible. What did we have, seven points? You're not going to win. You're not going to win."

Perhaps the biggest problem for Colorado is the lack of consistency at quarterback. They say in football that if you've got two quarterbacks, you really have none, because without having "the guy" who is good enough to rise above in a quarterback competition, you just don't have the talent at the game's most important position.

To that point, former five-star recruit Julian "JuJu" Lewis was the starter at the beginning of the season, but Sanders pulled him at halftime of Colorado's 23-13 loss to Baylor in favor of Isaac Wilson.

Wilson got the start against Texas Tech, and things looked okay after an opening nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. He finished the game with three interceptions, including a pick-six thrown in his own end zone.

Colorado in a bad situation at QB heading into teeth of the Big 12 schedule

At this point, and moving forward, Sanders is even considering freshman three-star quarterback Kaneal Sweetwyne.

It's a quarterback competition heading into the bye week for Colorado, and that just goes to show how bad things have gotten.

It's a quarterback carousel heading into a stretch that still features No. 12 Utah, No. 18 Oklahoma State and No. 22 Houston coming up, and that's just bad news for the Buffaloes.

Even Sanders seems to realize that it's a problem moving forward.

"That's the position that's somewhat disabling us and disarming us," Sanders said. "Somebody's got to step up and take hold of it and get it done."
