Jason Kidd is about to be back in the public eye.
The former Dallas Mavericks head coach Kidd is in advanced talks to join ESPN, veteran NBA writer Marc Stein reported on Monday. Kidd is expected to join the network as part of their NBA studio coverage, Stein adds.
Now 53 years old, the Basketball Hall of Famer Kidd had been the head coach of the Mavericks for the last five seasons. He led the team to two conference finals berths and a 2024 NBA Finals appearance over that span but managed to go just 26-56 (.317) last season to drop his overall career record in Dallas to 388-395 (.496).
Ultimately, Kidd was fired by the Mavericks in May, shortly after the hiring of former NBA champion executive Masai Ujiri as Dallas’ new president of basketball operations. Kidd has since been replaced as head coach by ex-University of Michigan champion Dusty May.
Also previously the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks as well as a lead assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, Kidd was recently in the news for an unflattering reason. One of Kidd’s former assistants made some comments dissing Kidd over their time together in Dallas.
Now Kidd appears to be formally transitioning into a media career. That said, Kidd did also make some interesting comments over the summer about whether or not he planned to coach again.
