We get you ready for another Saturday of college football with a look ahead in this edition of the Weekly Syllabus.
Also on deck: a look ahead to the college basketball season with Big Ten media days upcoming later this week, plus a glimpse even further down the road after a major class of 2027 commitment.
Winners of the past three national titles, the Big Ten's upper class has proven it can play with anyone in the country. The conference's depth has long been an issue, however, yet two previous afterthoughts can enter the national conversation with marquee wins in Week 6.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-0, 2-0 in Big Ten) are off to their best start since 2016 and host the defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers (5-0, 2-0 in Big Ten), ranked eighth in the most recent Associated Press top 25 poll, on Saturday. The Cornhuskers have outscored their first five opponents by 147 points, the program's best point differential through five games since 1996. (h/t Stathead)
A season ago, Nebraska went 5-1 through its first six games only to fade down the stretch, losing five of its final seven games. If this year is any different, it will start against Indiana.
The No. 21 UCLA Bruins (4-0, 2-0) were among the hottest teams in the country in September and are coming off a bye heading into a trip to the No. 13 Oregon Ducks (3-1, 1-0 in Big Ten). UCLA running back Wayne Knight is arguably the most underrated player in the country. He's been outstanding, rushing for 445 yards on 49 carries, an eye-popping 9.1 yards per attempt. The Bruins have already gained 1,126 yards on the ground this season, a program record through four games.
Oregon's rush defense was exposed in a Week 2 loss to Oklahoma State, which gained 237 yards on the ground in an upset 39-31 win.
"I have no idea," Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables told reporters about backup quarterbacks Whitt Newbauer and Bowe Bentley potentially getting reps during Saturday's Red River Rivalry game versus No. 1 Texas Longhorns (4-0, 1-0 in SEC). (h/t ESPN)
"We'll find out as the week goes here," remarked Tennessee Volunteers coach Josh Heupel on his squad's unsettled quarterback situation.
Oklahoma's John Mateer and Tennessee's Faizon Brandon entered the season in a starting role, but both have seen their spots challenged after early-season struggles.
Mateer, a fifth-year senior, has thrown four interceptions over his past three games, and Oklahoma has averaged 12.3 points per game during the stretch. Five-star true freshman Brandon has completed just 51.7 percent of his passes for 293 yards in three starts against power conference opponents. He was pulled during last Saturday's win over Auburn after starting the game 3-of-8 for zero yards and an interception. Backup George MacIntyre filled in admirably, leaving the possibility open he could start at Arkansas (2-3, 0-2 in SEC).
But even if Brandon wins the practice battle, both he and Mateer could be on short leashes. They might need big games to remain starters beyond this weekend.
The college basketball season tips off in less than a month, and the Big Ten is getting ready with its annual media days later this week. Ahead of the showcase, Big Ten media members unveiled their preseason predictions, and the Illinois Fighting Illini are projected to finish first, followed by the Michigan State Spartans and defending champion Michigan Wolverines.
Last season, the Illini reached the Final Four for the sixth time in program history and first since a national runner-up finish 2004-05. They have excellent size, with guards Andrej Stojakovic and Providence transfer Stefan Vaaks both measuring 6-foot-7, while David Mirkovic (6-9) and twins Zvonimir Ivisic (7-2) and Tomislav Ivisic (7-1) give them enviable length in the front court. Illinois will have to prove it on the court, but it's easy to see why Big Ten media is infatuated.
UConn is one of the top national champion favorites in 2026-27, but next year's squad is shaping up to be even more special.
Already securing a commitment from five-star point guard NaVorro Bowman Jr., the son of former four-time NFL All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman, coach Dan Hurley received another major win on Sunday when five-star wing Jordan Page committed.
"UConn now has the No. 1 recruiting class in 2027, as the only program with two five-star commits," ESPN's Jeff Borzello noted.
After reaching the national title game last season, the Huskies have unfinished business entering 2026-27. If they complete the job in March, UConn could have a squad capable of repeating.
