Tropicana Field catwalk helps Rays early in Game 2 of ALDS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The catwalk at Tropicana Field ended up helping the Tampa Bay Rays in the top of the second inning of Game 2 of the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees.

With Rays leading, 1-0, and right-hander Freddy Peralta on the mound, Yankees right-fielder Spencer Jones led off the frame and hit a towering fly ball to center fielder Jonny DeLuca, who had trouble locating the ball. It turned out that the ball caromed off the B ring on the catwalk and landed in the glove of outfielder Victor Mesa Jr. in short right-center field.

According to Rays.com, the ball is still “in play. If caught by (a) fielder, (the) batter is out and runners advance at their own risk.”

Both Jones and manager Aaron Boone wanted an explanation and appeared satisfied with the answer given to them by the umpires.
