The Green Bay Packers are 2-2 to start the season, and they're at the bottom of the NFC North. This isn't where quarterback Jordan Love or head coach Matt LaFleur wanted to be at this time of year, but it's the reality with which they're dealing.
But, there's a bright light. It's not all doom and gloom for the Packers. They have a solid quarterback, and that's something a lot of franchises don't have. The key is that he can't do it all, and it can't be a one-man show.
CBS Sports has released its NFL QB power rankings going into Week 5. In it, Garrett Podell says positive things about Love. He even ranks Love as the No. 11 best quarterback in the league.
He also says what everyone is thinking about the Packers right now: Everything is resting on his shoulders, and that's just not right.
"Jordan Love has to do everything for the Packers this season," he says, adding that they rank "dead last in rushing yards per game" at 58.0, which is almost 20 yards less than the Cincinnati Bengals.
"That makes it nearly impossible to play quarterback when the defense can not even bother to think about your run game," he writes. "Love has thrown multiple touchdowns in all four games this season, which is a huge factor in how Green Bay is somehow 2-2 through four weeks."
Love was also 22 for 30 for 197 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the team's victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On the season, Love has gone 87-of-154 (56.5%) for 1,041 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions. He ranks eighth in yards and is tied for seventh in touchdowns leaguewide.
The Packers offense is one-dimensional. As Podell noted, they don't have a running game. Their leading rusher is MarShawn Lloyd, who has 30 carries for just 81 yards, and they haven't scored any rushing touchdowns this season. Their leading rusher of the past two seasons, Josh Jacobs, is currently on the commissioner's exempt list in wake of his May arrest.
Running back is certainly an area of need for the team ahead of the NFL trade deadline (Nov. 10). Acquiring an effective running back could be a game-changer for Love and the Packers. The Packers have Love, but he needs help.
