Throughout September, NFL reporters and analysts suggested that the Cleveland Browns could make veteran wide receiver Jerry Jeudy available ahead of the trade deadline, which arrives on Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. ET.
However, such takes were shared before Jeudy tallied three receptions for 36 yards in Cleveland's 27-24 win over the rival Pittsburgh Steelers that improved the Browns to 3-1 on Oct. 1. For a piece published on Wednesday, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler explained why the Browns may not be in a hurry to sell Jeudy for pennies on the dollar this fall.
"At wide receiver, Cleveland's Jerry Jeudy is an intriguing name because of the emergence of rookie receivers KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston in Cleveland," Fowler wrote about a possible trade. "But some key context here: The Browns feel they have a good team, the offense needs at least three capable receivers, and Jeudy had multiple key catches Thursday against Pittsburgh. The Browns are big on value, so all attractive offers will be considered, but I'm not totally sold that they actually move him."
ESPN stats show that Jeudy ended Week 4 ranked sixth on the Browns with five receptions, eight targets and 62 receiving yards on the season. The Pittsburgh game aside, such numbers would indicate Jeudy is surplus to requirements as part of an offense that features Deshaun Watson serving as its starting quarterback.
Perhaps that will change, and Watson will target Jeudy early and often when the Browns play at the 1-3 New York Jets this coming Sunday. If it doesn't, however, trade whispers regarding Jeudy will likely only get louder.
According to Fowler and ESPN's Dan Graziano, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Las Vegas Raiders and the Indianapolis Colts are among teams "to watch" that could potentially trade for a wide receiver. That said, Jeudy's value to the Browns as a movable piece will likely only decrease if he becomes a nonfactor for the team's offense in October.
It's also worth mentioning that Browns general manager Andrew Berry could decide to hang onto Jeudy if the club wins more than it loses ahead of the trade deadline.
