White Sox hitters set unwanted postseason record in ALDS Game 3 loss to Guardians

Strikeouts have become a pretty accepted part of the modern Major League Baseball game. The thinking is generally that it's just another out, and that there is oftentimes a power trade-off that you get with it from a lot of hitters. Add in the improvement of pitchers leaguewide in terms of velocity and movement, and it makes sense that there has been an increase.

Sometimes, though, it gets a little excessive.

That was the case for the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night in their 9-3 Game 3 ALDS loss to the Cleveland Guardians.

White Sox set playoff record for most strikeouts in nine-inning game

White Sox hitters struck out 19 times in the loss, with every hitter in the starting lineup striking out at least one time. Designated hitter Sam Antonacci and left fielder Randal Grichuk were the only two who did not strike out at least two times.

How significant is 19 strikeouts in a nine-inning game?

Prior to Wednesday, it had never been done in a nine-inning playoff game.

What makes it even wilder from a Guardians perspective is their pitchers did this with a collective bullpen effort, using seven different pitchers.

Foster Griffin did most of the strikeout damage by getting seven of them in his 2.2 innings of work, while closer Cade Smith closed out the game striking out five of the six batters he faced over the eighth and ninth innings.

The White Sox still lead the series 2-1, but if they are going to win one of these next two games, they will have to put the ball in play at least a little more than they did on Wednesday.
