Knicks freezing contract extension talks is a ticking time bomb

The New York Knicks were engaged on multiple fronts all summer long with regard to contract extensions with their key contributors, but it appears that they are choosing to sit on the fence for now.

ESPN's Shams Charania relayed the Knicks' announcement that the front office is tabling all contract extension negotiations right now in order to focus on the start of their impending title defense.

Basically, they are delaying the inevitable. If anything, this flimsy stance will only backfire on them as they aim to defend the championship they won last season.

The Knicks are digging their own grave by delaying inevitable extension talks

New York's brass has been pretty stingy this offseason, which is puzzling given the window for dominance they generated in their title run.

Extension talks with Karl-Anthony Towns have slowly soured to the point of an express admission from the All-Star that both camps are far away from a resolution.

Miles McBride, another key player, has likewise admitted not being enthused with what the Knicks have put forth on the table, making him someone whom the team will likely have to part ways with.

Josh Hart is in the same boat as those two, adding another major front for the Knicks to deal with later.

By tabling contract extension negotiations with those players, the Knicks are not doing themselves any favors. Sure, the media-trained players are going to echo the sentiment from the team that focusing on the season is of bigger importance, but everyone knows that it does not make the problem go away.

The Knicks' team chemistry and smooth synergy on and off the court pushed them over the top last season. Those might end up becoming moot points if the avoidant style of the front office percolates into the very motivation of those players on deck for extensions.

If that happens, they should probably bid their quest for back-to-back titles goodbye.
