Eagles HC Nick Sirianni accepts blame for potential 'coaching malpractice' in London loss to Jaguars

Why didn't Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni opt for a touchback?

The coach wishes he had after his misstep cost the Eagles in a 19-17 Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. With eight seconds left and Philadelphia leading 17-16, Sirianni let Jacksonville return it instead. The decision backfired.

Jaguars running back Ameer Abdullah returned it 53 yards to the Eagles' 39-yard line and was tackled with one second left. Kicker Cam Little then drilled a 57-yard field goal, securing a win for Jacksonville.

Nick Sirianni talks kicking decision

"I cost us that game. That one's on me," the coach said before refusing to explain his reasoning for not kicking the touchback. "There's no way around it ... I just didn't do my job in that situation."

Perhaps Sirianni feared he would repeat the mistake of Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer. In a 34-31 Week 3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Rio de Janeiro, the Cowboys coach opted for a touchback with seven seconds left. Ravens QB Lamar Jackson then fired a 35-yard pass to wide receiver Zay Flowers, which set up Tyler Loop's winning field goal.

However, plays like that are rare. More importantly, the Eagles field a much better defense than the Cowboys. The unit features stars in defensive lineman Jalen Carter, linebacker Zack Baun and cornerback Cooper DeJean. Sirianni should've trusted his defense to make one more big play. Instead, he gave the Jaguars a chance to make it.

"I can't even comprehend what I just watched," CBS analyst Damien Harris, a former New England Patriots running back, said. "The fact that Nick Sirianni put the Eagles in a position to lose this football game ... it was nothing short of coaching malpractice."

Coaching mistakes are one of the main reasons the Eagles find themselves in an early 2-3 hole. Sirianni and his staff must stop making them, or the Eagles will keep tumbling.
