Corey Day holds off Jesse Love to win NASCAR O'Reilly Series race at Charlotte

For the second straight week, Corey Day's clutch gene showed when the lights were brightest.

The 20-year-old rookie won Sunday's NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway after taking the lead with 11 laps to go shortly after the race's final restart and holding off defending series champion Jesse Love in the closing laps.

The win is the fourth of Day's rookie campaign and his second straight after he won a thriller at Las Vegas last week.

Day did not get a particularly good restart, but had a huge run on the exit of turn 2 that allowed him to get under Love and Justin Allgaier to take the lead.

Allgaier won the final race off pit road and held the lead until there were 18 laps to go, when he slipped and hit the wall in turn 2, allowing Love to take the top spot. Day then passed Allgaier for second, though the final caution of the night re-racked the field one more time and gave Day the shot he needed.

Day rebounded after he incurred a pit road penalty early in the race for driving through too many pit boxes.

"The 2 got really loose from what I could see in front of the 7," Day told the CW. "I think that messed them both up. That was enough for me to get a good run off of it and take my run. It hink if I don't do that, then I don't win a race. What a job by my guys. I screw up... to have the car to do that... just so cool."

Day has made up 85 points in the championship over the last two races and is third in the standings, seven points behind leader Sheldon Creed with four races to go in the season. Love is second in the standings and two points back of Creed, while Allgaier is fourth and 15 points behind Creed for the top spot.

Notable results

Love, Creed, Allgaier and Carson Brown rounded out the top five, with Brandon Jones, Austin Hill, Anthony Alfredo, Taylor Gray and Brennan Poole completing the top 10.

Other notable finishers include William Sawalich in 11th, Parker Retzlaff in 12th, Harrison Burton in 13th, Sammy Smith in 16th and Rajah Caruth in 36th.

Sam Mayer finished 16th after a flat tire late in the race, while Carson Kvapil also had a flat tire and finished 32nd after taking his car to the garage. Kvapil, who entered the weekend only 19 points out of the championship lead, is now 40 points behind Creed.
