The Seattle Mariners' next manager could be a familiar face from the opposing dugout.
Mark Feinsand, Daniel Kramer and Brian McTaggart reported that the Mariners have received permission to speak with Houston Astros manager Joe Espada. His contract with the Astros expires at the end of October and the organization has not made any decisions as to whether or not to retain their manager.
Espada has been part of the Astros organization since 2018 when he was hired as manager Dusty Baker's bench coach. He has served as the Astros manager over the past three seasons, posting a 256-229 record, winning the AL West title twice.
President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has laid out several preferences for the Mariners' next manager. Previous managerial experience would be preferred while Dipoto wants an external voice to challenge any possible complacency in the organization.
Espada would fit both of those requirements. He has a track record of winning as a manager and a bench coach and could bring that mindset to the Mariners. Likewise, his experience with the Astros could lead to changes in how the Mariners evaluate and develop players.
As the only team with a definite managerial opening, the Mariners can take their time to find the right person for the job. Espada is likely to be one of several candidates interviewed. However, based on Dipoto's criteria, he could be the right fit.
