For the second consecutive season, the Los Angeles Rams have been abysmal on special teams.
Those issues popped up in Monday's 37-34 loss to the Buffalo Bills, and they have caused head coach Sean McVay to make a shakeup to the roster.
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Los Angeles is making a change at kicker and signing Blake Grupe off the New York Jets practice squad.
That means Harrison Mevis, the kicker who entered the season as the starter, is being demoted from his starting role. Mevis was 0-of-2 on field goals in Monday's loss, one of which was a game-winning attempt that was blocked in overtime.
Overall, Mevis was just 5-of-9 on field goals this season, something that has been a bit shocking to see after he went 18-of-19 on field goals last season.
The #Rams are moving on from K Harrison Mevis, per me and @MikeGarafolo, as coach Sean McVay authors a special teams shakeup.

Per @NextGenStats: the Rams lost about -110% in win probability across the course of the 2025 season from special teams snaps

In 2026, they've already lost -104% in total win probability on special teams
Grupe is in his fourth season in the NFL, and he's been a bit more accurate than Mevis has. Grupe has a career field-goal percentage of 81.9 percent and has missed just two out of 98 extra-point attempts.
Additionally, Grupe previously spent time with the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts, meaning he has great familiarity with kicking in a dome setting.
The poor performance on special teams Monday is certainly part of why the Rams lost their game, but the blame for a blocked field goal should not be placed on Mevis.
If the blocking holds up how it was supposed to, Mevis likely makes the kick, and he would still have his job. It'll be intriguing to see how Grupe does with his new team and see what kind of leash he has if he starts to struggle.
