A pair of fumbles from Buffalo Bills running back James Cook isn't something that will happen again in the future.
Not because Cook has excellent ball security and won't let it happen, but because he'll likely be yanked from the game before it can happen. Cook got a stern message from his head coach Joe Brady on Tuesday after ball security issues in Monday's win over the Los Angeles Rams.
Brady spoke to media members on Tuesday, and while he did have praise for Cook and the way he responded after his first fumble, he also made it known that consequences have to be considered when the issues continue.
"I have all the confidence in him. That's why I put him right back out there," Brady said. "But at some point, there has to be consequences when we're putting negative stuff out there. And so, it's conversations that we're having ongoing. James knows it's important to him, but, yeah, that can't happen. And it's going to cost us football games and almost cost us one. But we can't confuse because we won the game that that's okay. And so, it's got to improve or the carries are going to decrease."
Cook's first fumble of the game was originally ruled to be recovered by Los Angeles but was overturned and kept with Buffalo after an expedited review. The second one was an overtime fumble that nearly led to a game-winning field goal.

That's 11 fumbles for James Cook since the start of 2025. No other back has more than six over that same timespan.

Being called out by your head coach for turnover issues and having your workload threatened should certainly raise the alarms for Cook and his ball security.
Cook is one of the most dynamic running backs in the NFL, and for the Bills offense to be successful, Cook has to be a major part of that. He won't be able to do that, though, if he continues to put the ball on the ground and is eventually benched.
It will be intriguing to watch how Cook responds and see if his ball security issues become a thing of the past.
