The New Jersey Devils were not doing all that well in Detroit.
They gave up two goals on the first four Red Wings shots of the night. Opposing players kept getting behind the Devils defense for scoring opportunities.
Finally, even after they came back to take a one-goal lead after two periods of play, they saw Detroit manage to tie things up in the final frame.
Then Jack Hughes got loose early in overtime, and all was right with the world again for one night.

Jesper Bratt collected a missed shot off the right boards in the New Jersey zone to spring Hughes at center ice, and No. 86 skated in and wristed the puck over John Gibson's right pad just 1:19 into the extra session to lift the Devils to a 5-4 victory on Tuesday. The win improved New Jersey's record on the 2026-27 campaign to 3-3-0 overall after its third game in four nights, and also washed away some of the bitter taste from Monday night's home loss to Ottawa.
"It was a good effort by us," Hughes told the Devils' website afterward. "It was nice to get the win there."
It was the second time so far this short season that Hughes supplied the game-winner in extra time. The first came on opening night on Oct. 1 in a 3-2 win over visiting Philadelphia, his only other goal so far this season. Also scoring their first goals as Devils Tuesday night were Evan Rodrigues and Anthony Mantha, while Bratt and Nico Hischier had the Devils' other tallies. Alex DeBrincat scored twice for Detroit, his second one tying the game just under six minutes into the third period. Jake Allen made 23 saves in net for New Jersey, while Gibson made 32 stops.
Hughes now leads New Jersey with eight points in six games this season, including a pair of assists in Tuesday night's victory to go along with a game-high eight shots on goal. For his NHL career, he now has 170 goals and 436 points in 435 regular-season contests, and he has also scored 29 game-winning goals.
Hughes, Bratt and new left winger Arseny Gritsyuk combined for two goals, six points and 12 shots on the night.
"I think our line had a good night," said Hughes. "That was our first game together, and if we stick together, we'll keep building."
Next up, it's back home Thursday night at The Rock against the New York Rangers, the first meeting of the regular season between the two Hudson River rivals.
