Here’s the harsh reality in La La Land for the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers: Win Game 4 against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday night or go home.
The Brew Crew are on the brink of dethroning the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, but there is some good news for L.A. fans.
But first, the bad.
Only one team in MLB history has won a playoff series after trailing 3-0: The 2004 Boston Red Sox against the New York Yankees in the ALCS.
The odds of the Dodgers doing that this year are only 12 percent, per FanDuel.
So they're saying there's a chance.
Plus, the Dodgers are heavy favorites to win Game 4 and send the series back to Milwaukee.
Now, if you believe in miracles and karma and all of that, here's an interesting, albeit possibly meaningless, purely coincidental fun fact: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was part of that '04 Red Sox team that shocked the Yankees.
In fact, he played a pivotal role in starting that historic comeback. In the top of the ninth inning of Game 4 of the ALCS series in Boston, with the Yankees leading 4-3 and ace closer Mariano Rivera on the mound, the pinch-running Roberts stole second base.
Roberts scored the tying run on Bill Mueller's single, and David Ortiz won it on a walk-off homer in the 12th. The Red Sox went on to win the next three games to advance to the World Series.
Fast forward 22 years. Roberts is staring at another imposing 3-0 deficit, not from first base but from the bench. Or more like the hot seat as the Dodgers try to three-peat.
Dodgers fans brought out the knives after Wednesday's collapse in Game 3. Roberts was blamed for not pulling pitcher Blake Snell, who gave up back-to-back home runs to seal L.A.'s fate.
But it's a new day. Roberts, for one, knows that miracles can happen.
“It’s certainly possible," Roberts said of coming back from the three-game deficit. "I’ve lived it.”
