Report: North Carolina at top of SEC's 'wish list' for potential expansion

Bill Belichick brought a lot of glitz and glamor when he took over the North Carolina Tar Heels. That's what happens when you hire a former Super Bowl-winning NFL coach to lead your team.

This season, the Tar Heels have a 3-2 overall record and are 1-1 in ACC play. It's certainly a decent showing, though they'll have to work hard to get into the AP Top 25 poll.

Now, following the big move to hire Belichick for this franchise, North Carolina may be coming up on another big change, according to a college football insider, although this one would take a long while.

Tar Heels reportedly on SEC's expansion "wish list"

In a feature released on Wednesday, On3's Brett McMurphy reports that even though the SEC and Big Ten have "no immediate plans" to change or expand, if and when they do, North Carolina and Virginia are at the top of the SEC's "wish list."

"If and when that changes, the SEC has North Carolina and Virginia at the top of its wish list, industry sources said," he noted in the story.

The Big Ten, he reports, would consider "the usual suspects (from the ACC and Notre Dame), maybe throw in a random high academic school out West or Texas school for geographic and/or recruiting upside. A differentiating factor (that would be considered) is how big a pain their Board of Regents are being. No one wants to add a problem teammate."

Even though nothing is imminent, it's interesting to note that if the SEC does expand, Belichick's team is apparently one of the schools it wants.
