The WNBA Finals are about to begin, and the Atlanta Dream and New York Liberty series featured lots of intense moments that continue to pop up in conversations. Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham is weighing in on one of the more high-profile moments of the series, which ended with the Dream sweeping the Liberty in three games.
On the latest episode of the "No Hesitation Show" with Cunningham and Drew Hanlen, the two talked about a moment involving Angel Reese during the Liberty series. Cunningham discussed Reese's non-technical foul, as well as another double technical. She talked about the play when Reese ran down the court to confront Sabrina Ionescu and get in her ear.
While Cunningham applauded Reese for supporting her teammates, she also gave a blunt take on whether the incident should have resulted in a technical.
"Angel, I appreciate her having her teammates' backs. That just shows that she cares and that she loves her teammates," Cunningham said. "Here's my thing. If you're going to chase someone down the court and get in someone's ear, that should be a tech. Anytime, that should be a tech. It's going to be a tech in the regular season."
She added, "Now, if she were to stay on her side and just kind of yell and say something, I'm all for that, you know what I mean? But the fact that she didn't get a tech on that, I think that's absolutely insane."
Cunningham gave Reese credit for her physicality but also described a "dangerous" type of play from the Dream star.
"She is a player who goes after the ball. I appreciate that about players of her wanting to get on the floor and make the extra effort. Sometimes, people and the way they carry themselves and who they are, they don't wanna get down and dirty like this; and she is, so I'm gonna give her credit there. But you can't tackle someone in the air and then go for someone's knees and ankles. That's a dangerous play. Technically, both of those are a little dangerous. And for those just to go uncalled, is that not weird? Am I missing something?"
Cunningham had a different take on Reese's heated exchange with Jonquel Jones during the series, arguing that the officials should have let the players compete without handing out penalties.
"With the JJ, when she drove and got blocked, I wish that they wouldn't have gave either of them a tech," Cunningham said on the show. "I think that's good playoff basketball, like let them talk a little ... to each other. And then like their teams separate. Like I think that's fine."
