Adam Silver's Seattle statements could be meaningful for Trail Blazers

NBA commissioner Adam Silver has backed off on the league's plans to put an expansion team in Seattle, citing lower bids than they're receiving for a Las Vegas team. But there's another factor that could incentivize the NBA to take their time.

The same week ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported that the league got an expansion proposal from Mexico City, The Athletic's Mike Vorkunov reported new Portland Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon had discussions about relocating his team — and an obvious destination would be nearby Seattle.

“We are working to keep the team in Portland,” Dundon texted The Athletic. “That is the priority.”

NBA is trying to maximize expansion revenues

Expansion fees would be a huge financial boon to the 30 NBA owners. The bids for a Las Vegas franchise, plus an arena, are expected to approach $13B, which means each team would get a windfall of over $400M. Even if the Seattle franchise only went for $6B, roughly what the Boston Celtics sold for last year, that's another $200M per franchise.

However, that's not the only way owners could extract value from expanding to 32 teams. Should the Blazers indeed try to move from Portland, where they've played for 56 years, the NBA would be likely to assess a relocation fee. One Blazers official has suggested it could be as high as a billion dollars.

Would NBA owners turn down a payment of $33M each to keep the Blazers in Portland? Letting a team move to Seattle would mean the NBA could still expand to 32 teams using a different city, perhaps even Mexico City — or Portland.

New owner has been nightmare for Portland Trail Blazers fans

Tom Dundon has only owned the Blazers for less than six months, but he's become a controversial figure. Not only has the team been aggressive and contentious about proposed arena renovations in Portland, but Dundon has shown a propensity for extreme cheapness, laying off employees and lowballing former interim head coach Tiago Splitter (now head coach of the Chicago Bulls).

But perhaps Dundon's miserly nature will help keep the team in Portland. After all, Dundon is a man who wouldn't give his new head coach more than a one-year contract, do playoff T-shirt giveaway for fans or pay for late hotel check-outs for his staff. Is he really going to cut a check for $1 billion, regardless of how much it helps his valuation?

The NBA may simply be trying to drive up the bidding for its Pacific Northwest franchise. But in doing so, the league is clearly keeping the door open for one of its teams to move, whether it's the Trail Blazers or someone else.
