A move on Thursday indicated that the San Francisco 49ers could soon get an important offseason addition on the field for the first time this season.
San Francisco has opened the practice window for veteran wide receiver Christian Kirk, marking a significant step in his recovery and progress toward getting on the field.
Kirk signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the 49ers in the offseason and was expected to be a key contributor.
He suffered a calf injury in training camp that required him to be placed on IR and miss the early part of the season.

The 2026 season has followed a recent theme for San Francisco of injuries continuously building up, especially at wide receiver. That started in camp with Kirk and Ricky Pearsall, and it has continued during the season with De'Zhaun Stribling, Demarcus Robinson and Deebo Samuel.
The impending return of Kirk will certainly be a major boost to a San Francisco team that, despite being 5-0, ranks 13th in passing yards per game.
Kirk's practice window does not mean he is immediately ready to go, but rather that he is still able to practice while being on IR. It is highly unlikely he'll be ready to play in Week 6 or Week 7, so when could he possibly make his season debut?
San Francisco does have a bye in Week 8, so it may be a case of Kirk practicing for the next two weeks, being activated during the bye week and then making his season debut in Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
If that is the case, Kirk would have half of the season to get accustomed to the offense and build a relationship with quarterback Brock Purdy before San Francisco makes a push toward the Super Bowl.
