Unranked Auburn upsets No. 1 Georgia on game-winning field goal: Key numbers behind the stunner

For the second straight week, the No. 1 team in college football has fallen victim to an upset from an unranked opponent by a final score of 27-24 on a game-winning field goal.

Last week, it was Oklahoma knocking off Texas in the Red River Rivalry. Saturday, it was the Auburn Tigers taking down the Georgia Bulldogs in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.

How Auburn pulled off the upset

Less than 10 minutes into the game, Auburn faced a 14-0 deficit, and it appeared that Georgia was headed toward its 10th straight win in the all-time series.

That was not the case, however, as it was Auburn storming back for 24 unanswered points to carry a 24-14 lead into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs fought back to tie the game in the fourth quarter, and just when it appeared Georgia was going to escape, quarterback Gunner Stockton had his third turnover of the game.

Stockton's fumble gave the Tigers excellent field position, and after a couple of nice run plays and a personal foul, it was Alex McPherson knocking in the game-winning 34-yard field goal.

The story of the game was undoubtedly the Auburn defense forcing Stockton to turn the ball over three times.

The numbers behind the upset

Auburn's upset win Saturday had quite a bit of rarity to it, so let's dive a bit deeper into that.

  • Entering Saturday, AP No. 1 teams had won 93 straight home games against unranked opponents.
  • Georgia had won 53 straight games against unranked opponents.
  • The AP No. 1 team lost in back-to-back weeks to unranked teams for the first time since 1990.
  • Auburn's first win in Athens since the 2005 season.
  • Auburn's sixth win in program history against No. 1-ranked team.

There are no unbeaten teams remaining in the SEC

With the Bulldogs falling on Saturday, the SEC now has no remaining unbeaten teams. In the first year of the league going to a nine-game conference schedule, the grueling challenge of playing an SEC game week after week has reared its head.

Georgia is likely still considered the best team in the SEC, but there's no guarantee that will remain true. If the first six weeks of the season has shown anything, it's that everybody is beatable and anything can happen on any given week.
